Agenda

Interest and Commitment

So this doesn't end up being someone's personal pet project that will die an early death, lets have a show of hands, by adding your name to this list, separated by a comma.
TIP: Typing ~~~~ signs your name (with date).

  • Do you think this project is a good idea? Bear in mind there is already an initiative by RURUM education committee (Sina Raben et al) along these lines with the help of some language experts.
  • Would you contribute to the project?
  • The Kelabit Wiki will be modeled on the global Wikipedia. Are you already familiar with Wikipedia? If not, are you willing to learn?

Resources

We'll need volunteers to help make this happen as a community project. Please sign up for any of these roles, or suggest any other ways you can help.

  • There is already a large amount of words captured in other Kelabit-English dictionary like the online dictionary at Kelabit Net [1] from Mathew Amster's, and Robert Blust's work . The OKC also has a wealth of words in Kelabit in their multitude of spellings (See sample) from our years of chatting there since April 2004. So, could you help in putting these into the Kelabit Wiki as a start?

Policies

Such a big word that.. what can we call these things that we need to agree upfront like.. Please add any items you feel we should get consensus on before we proceed.

  • Should we keep the forum restricted to bonafide Kelabits or registered users only or open to the WWW?
    Discuss.
    • I personally prefer to keep it restricted. Access to be tied to the user database of OKC [2] SRajaDita 12:21, 29 July 2007 (CEST)
    • I agree to keep it restricted to the OKC (Online Kelabit Community) forum. Myself and my wife are non kelabit but will be moving to Pa' Umor and will be part of the Kelabit Community, so for this reason the OKC admin will choose only relevant members. Richard Howard172.142.145.214 18:53, 29 July 2007 (CEST)
  • Should we focus only on building an encyclopedia and leave the dictionary project to RURUM?
    Discuss.
    • Can someone get an update what RURUM is already doing? This project could possibly feed that work. SRajaDita 12:21, 29 July 2007 (CEST)
    • I think any other Dictionary project can only benifit from and to one on this Kelabit Wiki and so a dictionary integrated into this Wiki would work well. Richard Howard172.142.145.214 18:53, 29 July 2007 (CEST)
  • We are using the English version of the MediaWiki (the Wiki engine), and the menus you see on the left are fixed. The other option is to select Bahasa Malaysia.
    Discuss.
    • I would rather use English. The modern Malay words developed for all this new technology just sounds too foreign to me. I mean, is it me or does """Laman Utama""" not sound like a shopping mall to you? SRajaDita 12:21, 29 July 2007 (CEST)
    • So can the Bahasa Malaysian version be a language option for the site? If so I think it will increase the amount of people who can read and learn from the Wiki. Richard Howard172.142.145.214 18:53, 29 July 2007 (CEST)
  • Then there is the question of what language to use for the ""Categories"". This is a key thing for managing/indexing content in Wikis. The test site I've created so far uses English for both the content headings and categories. Just because I don't know half the Kelabit word to use. Like what is pronunciation in Kelabit for instance.
    Discuss.
    • I vote for English for the categories. Because it's not easily undone once you've made a mistake. I think it'll get messy especially as we spell words in various ways. SRajaDita 12:21, 29 July 2007 (CEST)
    • Maybe wherever possible the kelabit word or words could be added alongside the catagory headings. My only worry would be that it would take up too much room so maybe in a smaller font alongside or underneath? Richard Howard172.142.145.214 18:53, 29 July 2007 (CEST)
  • One suggestion was putting people information like a family tree with bio summary like the ones I've put under Category:People. See Idris Jala
    Discuss
    • I have the Ulung Palang family tree that I could put up if there is no objections about putting this information in public space. It's currently held online in a non-searchable site. It's not at all complete so it'll be great if more people can edit it.. The other option (which Wikipedia adopts) is for people to update their own profile in their user pages and only maintain bios of notable Kelabits (public figures like our ketua kampong etc), and historical figures in the main Wiki SRajaDita 12:21, 29 July 2007 (CEST)
    • I looked at the sample for Idris Jala and I think it looked good. I agree with self edited Bios though for all but notable and historical people. The family tree is a natural side-effect from these bio's due to the links to and from parents, siblings and children. I like it! Richard Howard172.142.145.214 18:53, 29 July 2007 (CEST)
  • Are we all happy with the name Kelabit Wiki?
    • YES
    • NO
      • Name1,
    • Discuss
      • Cannot think what else it could be called. I suppose this can be reviewed with time. Richard Howard172.142.145.214 19:27, 29 July 2007 (CEST)

Content

What would you like to see in the encyclopedia? ""Discuss.""

  1. Here are just some of the possibilities....local flora and fauna found in the Kelabit Highlands, our history, Kelabit individuals (including those that have assimilated into the Kelabit culture and society), places, poetry, music, folklore, dictionary, quotes, proverbs, jokes, current events.... SRajaDita 12:51, 29 July 2007 (CEST)

Action Plan

How do we proceed from here?

  1. I think we need to recruit more editors etc who are capable of adding to this Wiki. Maybe we need to be more forward in recruiting. Possibly if you can do mass emails from OKC and ask everyone at once wo that anyone who has the skills, info etc can input.--Richard Howard 13:45, 31 August 2007 (CEST)
  2. I also think that a lot of people would feel intimidated by the editing on this Wiki, so maybe there needs to be a submission form o here where anyone just clicks 'submit idea' and then a form comes up with headings such as. 'idea', 'name', etc and they can just write something like. 'Bario telecentre was built on' whatever date, OR 'kelatang are grubs found' wherever. Otherwise a section on the OKC forum where people can do this and we can add other less confident peoples ideas. Sometimes people dont have the time either so the same would be good for those people too.--Richard Howard 13:45, 31 August 2007 (CEST)
